The late, great comedian Bill Hicks once asked something along the lines of “If you see obnoxious assholes making idiots of themselves at a football game, are they drunk or high?” I just think it’s amazing something as detrimental as alcohol is perfectly legal while marijuana is a federal crime. Not saying I don’t sometimes drink alcohol - but if I had my choice it would be weed all the time!
I don’t currently smoke, but only because I don’t like dealing with black market drug dealers. The trusted friends I knew and bought grass from are now in jail, and may well be there for over five years just because they were selling dope! Everyday I hear about growhouses being busted, raids being executed, and pot smokers arrested, all the while police are bitching about being underfunded and overworked. How about not enforcing these stupid, outdated marijuana laws?
More and more studies come in talking about the positive effects of marijuana, it gains medical uses with almost every new study. It is already being used to encourage AIDS patients to eat and to treat the painful symptoms of MS. Not to mention the causal potsmoker, who experiences a general euphoria upon smoking. It is a non-addictive experience that harms no one. What difference does it make if one smokes some weed and watches cartoons?
The notion it is a gateway drug is also false. There is this stat that ~80% of cocaine users also use marijuana. That is misleading, and the DEA won’t tell you that ~80% of marijuana users DO NOT use cocaine. Cocaine users are just more apt to smoking marijuana, possibly too help them come down from the cocaine. Most marijuana smokers are useful, productive members of society. The fact is, most prominent people have smoked marijuana at one point in their lives - Bush, Clinton, everyone. It unites people of all backgrounds and all political affiliations.
You’ve heard a million times about how legalization would curb the black market for other drugs, how we could tax it and safely regulate its use. When I was a teen, it was a thousand times easier to acquire pot than it was liquor, only because one was black market and the other supermarket! I say just do it already - it’s no worse for you than any other smoke, it has health benefits, and its peaceful users are filling our jails and wasting so much money and police resources. This 4/20, instead of observing Hitler’s birthday or the anniversary of the Columbine Shootings, celebrate weed. Light up a big spliff. Maybe if Eric, Dylan and Adolf had a blunt or two, they wouldn’t have stained the world as they did. LEGALIZE MARIJUANA NOW!
